Milton's Delicatessen
Del Mar

Although this was the wife's first visit, I've been to Milton's a couple of times before. Unfortunately, the last time I was there was the night I had my heart attack and died twice, on the living room floor at midnight...

This time, it was shortly after my monthly appointment at the VA in La Jolla.and we were hoping to avoid the horrendous  traffic for the County Fair in Del Mar. We seem to have lucked out as traffic was very light and we zipped right in.

After looking at their menu online, the wife had already decided to try brisket french dip with au jus and horseradish, slaw & home made potato chips. I wanted to check out their Monte Cristo with a side order of their home made fries and an iced tea.

The wife says it's the second best dip she's ever had (the best is Philippe's in LA, where it was invented) and Milton's home made potato chips are to die for. The Monte Cristo is also the second best I ever had (the first was at Pirates of the Caribbean in Disneyland, where it was invented). The fries were very good and served in a miniature deep fryer basket.

Service was slow but steady, very professional and due to language constraints, there was a mix up with our order which cost us a couple of bucks. Evidently you get cole slaw with the Monte Cristo and fries with the dip but since I wanted to swap the slaw for the wife's fries, we ended up getting charged for side orders...

BTW, the portions were huge and next time, we'll split an order (I vote for the Italian Beef Sandwich).

Our total was $38 and coin and we tossed in a fiver as a tip, despite the mix up.

And by the time we left, traffic had backed up several miles, waiting to get into the last week of the fair but fortunately, it was on the other side (north bound) of I-5 and we missed it all.
